I chose to evaluate the first one: Staying on task during project-based learning:
- What is the purpose of the lesson - is it an intro to new material, review, extending learning, etc?
The purpose of this lesson was to extend learning but also review what they already knew by working with others making a group project. - Ask yourself: How do you know the students are learning?
The students defined to their own group what they would be working on during that particular week and what they had already worked on. This helped them review and reword what they have already learned and talk about what they hoped to learn. - Ask yourself: What is the teacher doing? I.E. What elements of the lesson (pedagogy, modeling, questioning techniques, etc) did you observe? Was there anything different about them from “traditional” learning?
The teacher was more on the side-lines as a coach directing the students on how to go about their learning. - Could you potentially use this lesson?
I could definitely use the ideas from this lesson. I have Spanish 4 students working on group projects about cultural themes. I have always wrestled with group work as when you grade it you don't want to feel that some students are being penalized if others in the group didn't do what they were supposed to do. The ideas presented here were really interesting. Students had to make a poster with post its and talk about what they were working on at the beginning of each session, what they would be working on and what they had already covered. It was great because at a glance you could see where they were at any given point on their projects.
